Why do new SLA Batteries perform worse than older ones?

Some users often notice that brand new sealed lead acid batteries they have purchased seem to have a lower performance compared to the ones they have replaced, especially in their Amp Hour output.

This issue is often incorrectly interpreted as a manufacturing defect when it is in fact normal for this battery type.

Like many deep cycle batteries (including those found in laptops and cellphones) the new unit needs to go through several cycles before it reaches its’ full capacity. This means fully charging and discharging the unit several times, ideally between ten and thirty times.

A brand new unit is typically about 5-10% below its’ rated Amp Hour capacity and this disparity should cause no call for concern. However, if the capacity is less than this you may be looking at a manufacturing defect and so you should contact your supplier for advice.

Note that BatteryGuy only supplies high quality, industry leading brands of SLA batteries and so manufacturing defects are very rare indeed.
