Battery Glossary – Lithium Metal Battery

Lithium Metal Battery – a primary battery (disposable) with an anode made up of lithium metal.

Benefits of a Lithium Battery

  • Lithium batteries are environmentally friendly and recyclable; with no toxic lead, cadmium or mercury present.
  • When compared to alkaline or lead calcium batteries, it takes fewer lithium batteries to provide the same amount of power.
  • Lithium batteries are less likely to leak and cause damage in electronics.

Despite offering characteristics that outperform many other battery chemistries lithium has been plagued by safety issues since its introduction in the 1990s. Although many of these have been addressed concerns over their stability live on and so in many cases, such as in airplane back up systems, inferior performing battery chemistries are still in use.
